We’re on the home stretch! AT sent us an update on the remaining work needed to complete the Great North Road improvements project…
Weather delays and what’s left to do
Auckland’s wet start to the year has pushed back some of the final works in the Great North Road improvements project, leaving about two weeks of night shifts to wrap everything up.
The main tasks remaining are linemarking and fixing issues with the high friction surfaces at the new signalised crossings.
Linemarking schedule
The linemarking work is planned for Monday 26 January through Thursday 29 January, 8pm-4am.
This work isn’t particularly noisy, though you’ll hear some vehicle movements and machinery if you’re near Great North Road during those hours.
During these night shifts, Great North Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
Side roads will be closed progressively while the green paint is applied, then reopened once it dries.
You might need to access your street from the next open intersection if you’re coming home during the linemarking work hours.
High friction surface repairs
There are some problems with the high-friction surfaces at the approaches to the new pedestrian crossings.
Rather than leave them as-is, they’re doing the right thing and re-laying them properly to ensure they’ll last.
This work is scheduled for night shifts Tuesday 27 January through Thursday 29 January, and Monday 2 February through Thursday 5 February, 8pm-4am.
The noisiest part – removing the existing surface – will be done by 10:30pm each night.
Laying the new surface happens later in the shift and is much quieter.
Over the next few nights, you’ll also see sweeper trucks removing excess high friction material from the road and cycleway.
Weather dependency
All this remaining work can only happen when the road is completely dry, so the exact timing depends on Auckland’s weather cooperating.
Given our recent run of rain, there may be further adjustments to the schedule.
Important: cycleway parking enforcement starts soon
With work nearly complete, AT will soon begin enforcing parking restrictions in the cycleway.
This is crucial for cyclist safety – please don’t park there or you risk being fined.
I know parking can be tight in places along Great North Road, but keeping the cycleway clear protects everyone using it. It also protects your wallet 😉
Nearly there
After nearly a decade of advocacy, planning, delays, and construction, we’re literally weeks away from completion.
The new road layout is already making a difference for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.
Thanks for your patience through these final night works.
