Auckland Transport has confirmed that new parking restrictions will come into effect on Great North Road and surrounding side streets from Wednesday 8 July 2026.
Signs and pay machines are being installed over the coming weeks, so don’t be surprised if you spot work crews out doing that.

Background
The new parking management follows the completion of the Great North Road improvements project, which upgraded the stretch between Ponsonby Road and Crummer Road. With new cycle lanes, bus stops, loading zones, and pedestrian crossings now in place, there is less space available for parking than before.
AT consulted on the proposed parking changes late last year. The final plan has been refined based on feedback received.
What’s Changing
Great North Road itself
Along the main road, parking will be time-limited to P60 (one hour), 8am-6pm, Monday-Sunday, operating outside bus lane hours.
Bus lanes run:
- City-bound: 7-10am
- Outbound: 3-7pm (4-7pm between Grosvenor St and Crummer Rd)
Loading zones are also in place at all times outside bus lane hours.
Side streets – Ponsonby Rd to Grosvenor St / Bond St
The tops of side streets in this section will have P15 time-limited parking (8am-6pm, Monday-Sunday).
Paid parking will apply at the top of the following side streets – just the section closest to Great North Road, down to where the existing P120 Residents Parking Zone begins. The rest of each street is unaffected.
Ariki St, Beaconsfield St, Bond St, Brisbane St, Dean St (northern kerb), Grosvenor St (eastern kerb), King St, Kirk St, Mackelvie St, Potatau St, Scanlan St, Sussex St, Turakina St, Waima St.
Paid parking pricing:
- $2.50/hr for the first two hours
- $3.50/hr after that
- A 10-minute grace period applies for pick-ups and drop-offs
As an example, eight hours of parking would cost $26.
Note: Dean Street (northern side, approximately 50 spaces) has a reduced rate of $1/hr following feedback.
Side streets – Grosvenor St to Crummer Rd
The tops of side streets in this section will have a mix of P15 and P120 time-limited parking (8am-6pm, Monday-Sunday), with some streets remaining unrestricted. Streets in this section include Cooper St, Elgin St, Commercial Rd, Harcourt St, Northland St, and Coleridge St (eastern kerb).
What’s not changing
The existing P120 Residential Parking Zones (RPZ) remain unchanged – P120, 8am-6pm, Monday-Friday, except for authorised vehicles.
The existing paid parking zone is also unchanged.
What Changed After Consultation
Based on community feedback, AT made two adjustments to the original proposal:
- Paid parking reduced to Monday-Friday only (originally proposed for seven days). This aligns with the Residential Parking Zone operating hours and reflects lower weekend parking demand in the area.
- Dean Street (northern side) paid parking reduced to $1/hr.
Angled Parking on Side Streets
Where space allows, AT is converting some side street parking to angled parking. This is expected to create 10 additional spaces in the area.
